Impact of a Mn-oxidizing bacterial strain on the dissolution and browning of a Mn-bearing potash-lime silicate glass

Abstract This work aims to investigate the role played by a model Mn-oxidizing bacterial strain and its exudates on alteration of Mn-bearing potash-lime silicate glasses representative medieval stained glass windows. Two glasses, with or without manganese, were prepared used for abiotic Pseudomonas putida inoculated dissolution experiments. Results show that presence P. slows down kinetics while changing stoichiometry. In biotic experiments, acidification solution at beginning experiment favors release K. After few days, drop in Mn P is observed, retained cells. Reciprocally, amount influences behavior. The more glass, faster population increases size produces siderophore. siderophore production followed formation brown phases, identified as oxides.
